Gender defines what a person can do and what kind of person they are. Men play sports, women dance. men play with tanks and dirt but women play with dolls and doll houses.

Men and women are different. As much as we may want to think that we're equal, we are not. Some of us may try to make ourselves be exceptions to those differences, but if you look at society as a whole, there will always be some differences. However, there are some differences between men and women that are differences because of the way we were brought up, not because we were born that way.

the author was trying to say that we as people put an emphasis on why we make a big deal about gender in our society . the author is trying to say we make a fuss about gender because we want to know our place in society.

later on in the book he says that people are gender socialized at a very young age and because of that that may be the reason why we act the way we are. so he may be trying to say we make since of gender by using what we have been taught and how we have been taught to act in society.

What I think the author means is there are diffrencs between women and Men. They try to say that Men get better jobs then Women, or that men get paid more then women. The society we live in today is what makes the world what it is. For example, If a women is to play who many may call a "male" sport, they may come up with the assumption that she is a lesbian. But also, if a male is to play what ppl may say is a "female" sport, suchs as a figure skater, then he may be Gay.

Society characterizes gender in a certain way. For example, society characterizes men as being strong. Society characterizes females as being sensitive, weaker then men, and emotional. Society feels that men and women should have certain roles in order to keep society in order. For example, boys are expected to play with trucks and girls are expected to play with dolls. This is the norm portrayed by our society. In society, you would not expect to see a young girl using a truck and and a boy playing with a doll. This is not acceptable in society's eyes.
This is the norm portrayed by society. Society is portraying the way that genders should act. Men and women are acting a certain way because that is the way because they know that is the way they are expected to act. They know that society is viewing them and they want to be pictured as normal. Today, genders want to be accepted by society causing them to act the way society believes they should act.

I think the quote is saying that the gender gap is of our own creation, not by the doings of an actual difference between the two genders. It is tradition, and therefore we immediately treat children differently depending on their gender. We are socialized to believe there is a difference, and even though men have been proven to be physically stronger, this could be because after generation upon generation of men taking charge and doing the physical projects, their bodies have adapted to that type of work.
