Sociology of Education: The purpose of schools

Know: The goals of education

Understand: Do the tests do a "good" job of measuring the goals of education?

Be able to do: Compare two schools that you know about

Step 1: Read the passage from Savage inequalities

Step 2: Consider the Various Goals of Public Schools

Pages 374 to 384

Transmitting Culture
Promoting Social and Political Integration
Serving as an agent of change
The Hidden Curriculum
Credentialism
Bestowal of Status
Define gender roles
Create varied/common expectations for people

Step 4: Compare two local schools using the Great schools or Smart Choices website.

Record your thoughts on Handout 3

Step 5: Discuss whether these schools do a good job performing any of these goals?
Can we evaluate all the schools using the site?
What more information is necessary to know how the schools are doing?

Step 6: View "College Summit"

Step 7: Read one of the commentaries on the New York Times Room for Debate Site

Answer the question:

Do the standardize tests measure our goals for education? Explain.

No standardized testing does not measure the capabilities of students no matter what environment students are in.
standardized test, test one thing and that is how to pass or fail a test. How hard could it be to pass a test that is basically drilled into students heads upon arrival. Teachers are forced to teach students the test s that they can pass the test and make their school look good. the government almost forces school that are not private to do this because if schools cant pass these test they wont be funded and, that means no more jobs for about a hundreds of people.
i think that the way to successful test a students skill may be through test, that evaluate a students problem solving skills and creativity.

No, Standardized tests do not effectively measure the capabilities of a student. The only thing that standardized tests measure accurately, is how fast students are capable of complete the test. There are some students that are very intelligent, but they just aren't quick readers, or they just need more time to write the answers down. If the government insists on making students that go to public schools take tests like these, then they should give them more time. That way it is easier to tell who knows the material and who doesnt.
