Why do gangs form?

Use the documents from yesterday and the film, Gangland:Race War, to answer this question.

Gangs for from a result of race, drugs, poverty and protection. Race has a large impact in forming gangs. For example in Los Angeles if you grow up in a black neighborhood you will jion a black gang and if your hispanic then you'll jion a hispanic gang. Drugs brings money and as a result people establish gangs to own the "corners" that sell these drugs and make money. As a result of being in poverty people establish these gangs to get out of poverty but gang members usually end up dead or in jail before they get enough money to leave their state of poverty or choose not to after awhile. The main reason gangs form in the world is to get protection in their community. Basically if they are not in the gang they are a enemy, and they would rather be the ones doing the beating and killings rather then the one being beat or killed. For example in Los Angeles a 14 year old girl was murdered in 2007 because of being black and was not afilated with any gangs. If she was in a gang, it is arguementative that she would not have been killed because she was being protected by a gang.

Alexis Phillips Why do gangs form?

Gangs form because they see being in a gang as a form of respect. In tough neighborhoods all a person has is respect. If you don’t have that then its like your life is in danger. People also like the idea of having power. They have nothing else to look forward to; they have no education, no jobs and no future, so being in a gang makes them feel like they are something. People form gangs to protect their selves and their families.
In earlier times gangs were formed for protection.

Gangs form for the following reasons:

1) Some people feel the need to be accepted so they conform to gang life.

2) Other people are poor and feel desperate to acquire money by any means.
Depending on which city a heavy population lives in, there will be a high unemployment rate to follow it.

3) People like the feeling that intimidation gives them.
In addition, many people have prejudiced thoughts toward a different race.

4) In certain areas, one of the only ways to be safe is to be in a gang.
An example of this is when innocent civilians were shot/killed by a shootout.
However people who join a gang are looked out for by their own gang members.

Gangs form from a start of poverty. A low income means people can not buy the things they need. Also, there is a certain security people in their life, they see gangs as a way to feel secure. As gangs get bigger they become more powerful and more dangerous, giving them a bigger reputation. As the need for money increases gangs look to other ways to make money, and fast. Gangs later find out that the selling of drugs can make them money. Money is power, and drugs is money.

Gangs form as a result of very low life standards and living conditions. growing up in a poor neighborhood, going to a bad school, there are many things that cause the kids to fall to joining a gang. A gang can seem like the only way to seem important, the only way to have a impact on the society, even a simple fix to leaving poor life. by selling drugs with there members and having there brothers they have that sence of importance.

Gangs form for a variety of reasons, there is not one single reason which causes them to form. Meaning there isn't one single way to stop them. The formation of gangs depnd on location, economic status, and protection.
Location is a reason why gangs form because,d depending on where you live there is a higher potential to join a gang. There are certain regions that are prone to gang related activity, which was seen in the show we saw in class.
Economic status is a key component to why gangs form because, it allows the opportunity for peoeple to make money without having an education.
Protection is the other reason why i think gangs form. That is because in certain places, where gangs are prominent, the only way to be protected is by joining a gang, which would provide a group of people to protect you if anything happened to you.
